Martina Mellang earns master’s degree

Martina Summer Mellang of Lutsen has earned a master’s degree in public health from the University of Wisconsin- LaCrosse, and participated in the school’s commencement ceremony May 11, 2014.

Martina is the daughter of Sally and John Mellang of Lutsen, and is a 2004 graduate of Cook County High School. She received a bachelor of applied sciences degree from the University of Minnesota in 2009.

Nickolay graduates from Northwestern College

Jackson Nickolay was among 277 graduating seniors at Northwestern College’s commencement ceremonies Saturday, May 10. Twenty-five students received Bachelor of Science in nursing degrees, while the rest of the graduating seniors were granted Bachelor of Arts degrees. Nickolay graduated Magna Cum Laude.

Dr. James Bultman, former president of Northwestern College, addressed the graduates in a speech entitled To Serve or Be Served: That Is the Question. Dr. Bultman and his wife, Martie, received honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degrees during the ceremony.

Jackson Nickolay of Hovland majored in theatre at Northwestern College. He is an Honors program scholar, the recipient of the outstanding graduating senior award in theatre/speech, and the Barry Boersma Award.

Jackson is the son of Michele Miller and Tim Nickolay of Grand Marais.

Trevor Delamater’s poetry published in literary magazine

Trevor Delamater of Lutsen, a student at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, is among 27 students who have had their writing or artwork published in Northwestern’s literary arts magazine, Spectrum. The annual publication, sponsored by the English department, includes a selection of poetry, fiction, literary nonfiction and artwork, chosen by a panel of students.

Delamater is the son of Mark and Margaret Delamater of Lutsen. He is a sophomore and is majoring in business administration and writing/rhetoric at Northwestern College. He received first place for his poem, “Reflections on Trees From the Young Philosopher Goldfish: After M.C. Escher’s ‘Three Worlds.’” His poems, “The Sacrament of Snow,” “The Cedar” and “Fishbowl,” were also published in Spectrum.

Winners from each category are determined through judging by an outside author. The judge this year was Daniel Scott Tysdal, award-winning poet and lecturer in English at the University of Toronto Scarborough. Tysdal has penned two books of poetry and a creative writing textbook. He visited Northwestern College in February as part of the Deep Song Reading Series.
