Ian Sylvester earns dean’s list honors
Ian Sylvester has earned a place on the dean’s list at American Military University for the first quarter of 2013.
To achieve this, a student must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.75.
Ian is pursuing a master’s degree in Military Studies. He is a 2007 graduate of Cook County High School, and is currently stationed in Cheyenne, Wyo. Proud parents are Jeff and Annette Sylvester of Grand Marais.
Dean’s list for Mesabi Range College announced
Mesabi Range Community & Technical College provides high-quality education resulting in rewarding employment, lifelong learning, and the enriched lives of our students and community. The college recently named a number of Cook County students to the dean’s list.
Named to the dean’s list is Daniel Nelson of Tofte.
Named to the dean’s list with honors was Waylon Christensen of Schroeder, Sam Crowley of Schroeder, Jessica Gilbertson of Grand Marais and Jory Schliep of Schroeder.
Addie Gecas receives chancellor’s award
Addie Gecas of Grand Marais received the chancellor’s award for the fall 2012 semester at University of Wisconsin-Stout. Gecas is majoring in apparel design and development.
The award is presented to students who have a grade point average of 3.5 or above.
Addie is a recipient of the Luther Mahan and Rita Mahan Christoffersen Endowed Scholarship at UW-Stout. She is the daughter of Greg and Barb Gecas of Grand Marais.
University of Wisconsin-Stout, Wisconsin’s Polytechnic University, is a special mission university in the UW System. The university has a long-standing reputation of serving business, industry, education and the helping professions through its specialized educational programs.
Jackson Nickolay in Zambia Home
Jackson Nickolay, a student at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, and a member of the school’s Drama Ministries Ensemble, performed a new worship drama, Zambia Home, in Iowa, Michigan, Illinois, Pennsylvania and New York during the college’s spring break March 1-11.
Zambia Home is the third of a trilogy of plays that follows the career and dramatizes the spiritual insights of Iowan Arlene Schuiteman, a nurse missionary to the Sudan, Ethiopia and Zambia.
Nickolay is a junior and is majoring in theater at Northwestern College. He is the son of Michele Miller of Hovland and Tim Nickolay of Grand Marais.
Northwestern College is a Christian college of more than 1,200 students in Orange City, Iowa.
Two local students named to UM Twin Cities dean’s list
Two Grand Marais residents have earned academic distinction by being named to the 2012 fall semester dean’s list at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities.
Jacob B. Rude is a junior enrolled in the College of Education human development program. He is a 2010 graduate of Cook County High School. He is the son of Brad and Sandi Rude of Grand Marais.
Kristina Rude is a junior enrolled in the College of Education human development program. She is a 2011 graduate of Cook County High School. She is the daughter of Brad and Sandi Rude of Grand Marais.
To qualify for the dean’s list, a student must complete 12 or more letter-graded credits while attaining a 3.66 grade point average.
Northwestern College names Kristy Thompson to dean’s list
Kristy Thompson, daughter of Ryan and Sherry Thompson of Grand Marais, was named with high honors to the fall semester dean’s list at Northwestern College in St. Paul.
The dean’s list includes full-time students with a grade point average (GPA) during the semester of 3.65 (out of 4.0) or higher. Thompson is pursuing a degree in intercultural studies at Northwestern. Highest honors are awarded to students with a GPA of 3.90- 4.0, high honors are awarded to students with a GPA of 3.75-3.89 and honors are awarded to students with a GPA of 3.65-3.74.
Founded in 1902, Northwestern College is a private Christian liberal arts college offering more than 70 areas of study, five master’s degrees and several associate degree and certificate programs. More than 3,000 students representing 33 states and 19 countries are enrolled in Northwestern’s traditional undergraduate and graduate and continuing education programs.
