Cold weather is here

After a warmer-than-usual January, temperatures have taken a deep dive across the Northland.

Cold weather is here and it’s nipping at your nose and numbing your toes if you don’t dress for it.

Paired with wind, the Arctic cold has made for some dangerous wind chills in Cook County. Monday, January 30, saw wind chills of -25 to -40°. According to the Duluth Weather Channel, a few places in far north-central Minnesota and the Arrowhead “may see a few hours of slightly colder than -40° wind chills.” Monday night into Tuesday morning featured wind chill values from -25 to -35°.

“There will be slight moderation into mid-week before another brief period of cold Thursday into Friday morning. As a result, additional Wind Chill Advisories will be likely through late week over portions of the Northland.”

The 10-day forecast looks like day-time temperatures will warm back into the mid-20s, with nighttime temperatures hovering in the mid-teens. According to the Weather Channel, the average February temperature for Cook County (near the lake) increases from 24 F to 30 F and is overcast about 61 percent of the time. However, Weather-US.com says the average high temperature in February is 20 F, with the average low temperature 10 F. No matter what, it’s time to throw another log on the fire and scarf around your neck if you venture outside.
