Although the weather was rainy and cold, that did not dampen the spirits at the Kids Plus Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, March 31. The Cook County Community Center was packed with families enjoying the day, despite the return of chilly weather.

More than one person was heard recalling that every year in the three-year history of the event has been rainy, snowy or cold—or both! However, about 100 kids enjoyed an Easter buffet, hunting for candy-filled eggs, pictures with the Easter Bunny, guessing the jelly beans, a cake walk, ice skating in the curling rink, and more.

There were some whimsical entries in the cake decorating contest. Winning first prize was Joe Drake of Cakes by Drake in St. Paul with an elaborate and entertaining entry, “Angry Birds meets Alice in Wonderland.” Second place was won by Lola’s Sweet Life Bakery with an elegant and cheerful daisy cake. And in third place, with a lazy bunny dozing on a realistic tree stump was Robert Gotchie. All of the donated cakes were on silent auction and proceeds went to the Kids Plus program.

The event also included a Peeps eating contest. Entrants Alicia Smith, Ryan Smith, Sammy Sietsema, Molly Sietsema, Hailey Smith, Boston Henneman, Billy Hackett and Rio Tersteeg ate dozens of Peeps to see who was the last kids standing—well, sitting at the table. Hailey Smith outlasted her friends and won—an assortment of Peep candies and memorabilia.

So, despite the chilly weather—or perhaps because of it—the hearty North Shore kids had a great time at the 2012 Kids Plus Easter Egg Hunt.
