Maddy Cochrane, a 2006 graduate of Cook County High School who played club soccer through high school, has continued her soccer career on a college level. She is senior co-captain of the Macalester College Scots. The Scots have been selected as an at-large team to the 63-team NCAA Division III women’s soccer championship playoffs.
Macalester will be the host site for matches November 14 – 15. Macalester, playoff runnersup, enters the nationals with a 13-5-2 record and will host the College of St. Scholastica (17- 3-2) on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
It is an interesting twist that Cochrane’s team will face St. Scholastica, as she played club soccer with several of the players who will now be her opponents on the Scholastica team. Cochrane plays center midfield.
This is Macalester’s 14th trip to the NCAA playoffs under head coach John Leaney, who is retiring from coaching following the season. Leaney is retiring because his wife died of breast cancer and he is raising his young son as a single parent. The team recently held a cancer fundraiser called “Kick Cancer” (the same week the CCHS volleyball team held its Dig Pink fundraiser). The soccer players donned pink uniforms to play.
TheScots are 18-10-3 all-time in the national playoffs.
Maddy is in her senior year at Macalester. She is the daughter of Tim and Jean Cochrane of Grand Marais. Maddy Cochrane, center midfield at Macalester College, takes the ball up the field. Cochrane is senior co-captain of the Macalester Scots. Her college team has been selected as an at-large team to the 63-team NCAA Division III women’s soccer championship playoffs November 14 -15.
