Coach reflects on Viking football season

In the last home game of the year Owen Anderson (10) led his teammates onto the field. The Vikings had a tough season, but return a lot of younger players who saw significant starting action, and that experience should bode well for the next few years. A difficult season came to an end last week when the winless Vikings lost to Braham 32-6 in the first round of the playoffs. Still, Head Coach Mitch Dorr found some positives in what had to be the most injury-marred season a Cook County High School team has ever endured.

“I honestly thought we played our best football of the year in our final game. We had the 4th ranked team in the state (Braham) a little nervous at halftime when we were down 6-12. We played really good football and gave our best effort on the field,” Dorr said.

“This season will be def.ined by a lot of adversity. Losing Thomas Anderson, who is arguably one of the best players in the area, for the season was tough. That was combined with numerous other serious and sporadic injuries that never allowed us to field the same lineup twice. We never played the same lineup twice and we never played the same players on either offense, defense, or special teams in two straight games.

“Our young men gave a great effort throughout the season and we had many young players that gained invaluable experience throughout the season,” Dorr said.

For the season Jacob Schroeder rushed for 757 yards and averaged 6.2 yards per carry. Joe Borud gained 397 yards and Jack Wieben was right behind him with 388 yards. They both averaged over 4 yards per carry. Borud also played some quarterback and was 9 of 23 for 144 yards through the air. Quarterback Leo Johnson was 34 of 104 for 504 yards. Wide receiver Owen Anderson caught 22 balls and gained 375 yards while Borud caught 8 passes for 139 yards and averaged 18.2 yards on 21 kick-off returns.

On defense Schroeder led all Vikings with 87 tackles. Owen Anderson and Frankie Miller each had 54 tackles, followed by Joe Borud (53), Seth Warren (51), Brandon Curtis (37), Jack Wieben (35), Jonny Jacobsen (33), Andrew Lashinski (21), Colton Thompson (20), Devyn Deschampe (19), Dylan Works (17), Breyer McQuatters (17), Richie Furlong (15), Noah Warren (15), Jake Carlson (10), Leo Johnson (4), Cy Fortunato (4), Jamie Wick (3), John Pearson (3), Jaret Baker (2), Jack Viren (2) and Andy Farley with 1 tackle. Jonny Jacobsen and Brandon Curtis led the team with two quarterback sacks and Andrew Lashinski had one interception.
