Co-op mural is an important community asset

My husband and I first experienced the splendor of the North Shore three years ago and were instantly enamored. The friendly, caring community, robust arts culture and high quality shops and restaurants added to the amazing outdoor appeal.

I remember experiencing the beauty of Artist’s Point, enjoying an incredible piece of bumble berry pie, and stumbling into the Cook County Whole Foods Co-op. We were drawn to the co-op by the intriguing exterior artwork. It was refreshing to see a business hosting creative and progressive public artwork and we found that the offerings inside were equally impressive.

Today we are proud members of the co-op. We are thrilled about the planned expansion. However, I am compelled to share a concern.

At some point, the elected Cook County Whole Foods Co-op board of directors authorized the creation of a mural. Regional funders provided financial support and a couple hundred of Grand Marais’ best and brightest young people poured their heart and soul into its creation.

The children were given permission to create a local treasure for an appreciative community. At that time, the co-op assumed responsibility for a unique work of art. The current directors have responsibility for this art.

In addition to significant local funding, I have no idea how much time was invested, nor what the art appraises for today, but I see a priceless one-of-a-kind source of pride for the community and a unique asset for the co-op.

The board has a hellacious responsibility in running the business and planning the expansion. They have my gratitude for their important work. In the midst of this very important work, I have a huge favor to ask . . . . that they carefully consider the plans for the mural.

I am aware of a hard-working citizens group doing everything possible to support the expansion efforts and raise funds to save the mural. Thank you to those who support this effort! I hope the directors will reconsider the timeline and allow these committed folks to make an important difference in the project and the community.

If you chop down a tree, you may plant another. If you opt for a buzz cut, your hair will grow back. If you destroy the mural, it will be gone forever.
