Although most of the world wants to be nowhere near ticks, the Sawtooth Mountain Clinic is collecting them. Deer ticks, that is.
According to Dr. Sandy Stover, the Minnesota Department of Health is trying to find out more about the presence of deer ticks in Cook County. Only the blacklegged ticks are believed to carry the spirochete that causes Lyme disease, and the researchers from the state have not obtained any specimens in Cook County. Dr. Stover said there have been cases of Lyme disease in Cook County — but it is hard to prove where the tick exposure may have originated.
If anyone sees what they think is a deer tick on themselves or gets one off a dog, they are asked to put it in a small zip lock bag, label where it was found, and drop it off at the Sawtooth Mountain Clinic. There will be a tick-collection box at the front desk. The ticks will be forwarded to the Department of Health.
