Climate change is real

It’s happening now. It’s happening here. I applaud Naomi Tracy-Hegg and Olya Wright for standing up and saying we are in the midst of a Climate Emergency and urging Grand Maris City Council and Cook County Board of Commissioners to declare this through resolutions. We are so close to the edge of no return. No matter what we do to curb our CO2 pollution and heal the planet won’t be enough to stop all types of plant and animal species from dying, major shifts in weather and seasons, and clean water and food become scarcer.

We can stave off the worst of it, we do have enough time and resources to do this, if we start acting now. We can also build a better tomorrow for all, not just those with wealth: nations, communities, and families. In the book of Genesis, the first job of humans is the caring of the Earth. In the first creation story, God tells all life, not just humans, to be fruitful and multiply. We have lost sight of these foundations and are seeing the consequences. Now is the time to take this seriously, caring for our planet, all life, and the least of these in our world, who contribute barely anything at all to the problem, but are seeing what little resources they have destroyed because of our actions. We need to leave the carbon-based, consumer-oriented economy behind and build a renewable, value and people oriented economy for today and the for the future of our planet. Recognizing we have a problem; a true crisis is the first step.
