Cook County News Herald

Clarification:

Regarding the December 22 article entitled AmericInn owner denied time to prepare for higher tax classification, County Assessor Betty Schultz and Assistant Assessor Allison Lowe told the News-Herald that owner Dennis Rysdahl had been given time to appeal a new higher-tax commercial property classification, although he was denied the extra time he asked the county board to give him.

After an evaluation by the Minnesota Department of Revenue and then-assessor Mary Black last summer, eight Cook County lodging establishments received notice that they would be losing their seasonal resort status, and the county board gave them until June 2013 to appeal the change and until 2014 to start paying the higher rate.

Assessor Schultz said the AmericInn was notified in December 2011 that its classification would be changing, resulting in having to pay higher taxes in 2012, and that Rysdahl had until last June to appeal the change.

“We make every effort to be unbiased,” she said.
