With the expansion and remodel currently taking place at Best Western Superior Inn, Scott Mehlhaff told city councilors that he and his wife, Christine, would like to add a bar area to serve their customers.
Mehlhaff appeared before the council on Feb. 22.
Mehlhaff, who co-owns the Best Western Plus Superior Inn in Grand Marais with his wife Christine (Chris), asked the city to grant Best Western a liquor license so they could offer their guests strong beer and wine. Scott and Chris own several other hotels, he said, and they have found that their guests are coming to expect this service. The bar will be located in the new expansion area just to the left of the front desk.
“The hotel is currently adding and expanding our lobby space and breakfast area and seating for guests,” Scott said.
Also, a new fitness room and more room for laundry and storage are part of the addition.
Council unanimously approved the liquor license, and while the bar is for hotel guests, locals will also be welcome. During the shoulder seasons—the slow times–Mehlhaff said music would be brought into the bar for entertainment, with locals certainly invited to attend.
