Following a request from city staff, the Grand Marais City Council approved the purchase of Allied Radio Matrix for Emergency Response (ARMER) radios that will be placed in street department and utility vehicles.
The decision was reached at the council’s March 28 meeting.
Cost of the radios, which will be purchased from DSC Communications, is $24,589.
Currently the city has been using a VHM radio system that operates on narrow bandwidth that isn’t compatible with the ARMER system, which is now used by the county, school, fire departments and Arrowhead Cooperative.
Mike Roth, the city administrator, said in a recent power outage the city’s staff wasn’t able to efficiently communicate with law enforcement dispatch and other entities the workers needed to reach.
Council passed the resolution unanimously to make the switch in radio systems.
