City Council accepts agreement for a dog park to operate on city property

Woofs of joy!

Years of sustained efforts by Cathy Quinn and the rest of the Go Dog North Shore (GDNS) board have culminated in the city soon having a dog park.

On June 8, the Grand Marais City Council approved an agreement with Go Dog North Shore for construction of a three-acre dog park on city land.

The new area will be built below the Water Tower across the street from the Horse Park, which once doubled as the dog park.

Once the paperwork is completed, ground will be broken with the goal of completing the project this summer. But help and money are needed.

Go Dog North Shore is still in need of funds. To date, the organization has raised about $70,000, but at least $10,000 more is needed to cover the fencing and cost of building the parking lot. Then there are costs associated with liability insurance, signs, waste bag stations, etc.

“If you haven’t donated yet or would like to increase your donation, we sure would appreciate it! This is a great time to still get in on our $500 fence dedication or become a business sponsor,” said Cathy Quinn.

Quinn also said volunteer workdays would be scheduled to get ready for the construction but noted that volunteers would have to sign liability waivers before working.

“We are thrilled to finally be able to make this a reality! Quinn said. “People can donate directly through our website www.godognorthshore.org/donate. Our mailing address is also listed there for anyone who prefers to mail a check. I’m hoping to schedule some workdays soon. The best way to stay in the loop is via our Facebook page and email updates.”
