City Attorney Don Davison unexpectedly resigned his position Wednesday, June 10, when he presented a letter to Grand Marais city councilors announcing his decision.

Davison offered no reason or explanation during the meeting, but said he would offer his assistance during the transition process, until a replacement is found. Council voted unanimously to accept the resignation, which is effective July 15.

Mayor Sue Hakes said it was important to move quickly to fill the contract position, and told City Administrator Mike Roth that she wanted council input on writing the request for proposals (RFP) and deciding where it will be advertised. As a result, council voted to hold a special meeting June 17 to discuss the RFP and solicitation of candidates.

Roth said he could have a draft RFP ready for that meeting, and said the city may need to hire a temporary fill-in until a permanent replacement could be found. Roth said determining such things as how many hours would be needed from the new attorney, and whether meeting attendance would be required (Davison lives in Grand Marais and attends all council meetings) will have an effect on who applies for the job, particularly those candidates who live out of

town.

Following the meeting, Davison said he believed that after more than 30 years of practicing law, it was simply time to pursue other interests. He has served as both Cook County attorney and city attorney during that time, 24 years in the latter position.
