After 53 years, Chuck Petek is closing his downtown barbershop.
The doors will shut September 24, at the conclusion of the day when the last patron’s hair is swept from the floor.
With the advent of COVID-19, Chuck has only accepted reservations from people he knows. He hasn’t allowed walk-in business from visitors since the start of the pandemic. It’s been a hard transition and he said it was time to give it up.
With his departure, Grand Marais will be without a barber for the first time in more than 100 years.
Said Chuck, “I want to thank all of my friends and customers for their great business!”
While he is leaving his longtime shop located at 121st Ave. West, which is now located in the back of Gunflint Mercantile and The Big Lake retail stores, Chuck said he is open to cutting hair if called on. “My clippers can travel,” he said with a big smile.
