Christmas wishes

By the time this paper gets to you, Christmas will be almost here. If you are like me you will have to run out and buy a few more presents, wrap presents, put up a tree—if you haven’t already— decorate the tree, put the decorations back on that the cats have batted off, and feel exhausted from the rush of it all.

For me, the thrill of Christmas is going to church, visiting with family and friends I haven’t seen in awhile, and watching my kids and now granddaughter open presents. Visiting, eating, taking a break, even for a day, is an excellent present in itself.

Here’s hoping this holiday goes well for you. And remember, the best gift of all can be volunteering to help someone in need or visiting with someone who is a shut-in. Buying presents is one thing. Giving someone else your presence is something that can’t be duplicated, replicated, or bought in a store. Merry Christmas!

More on Moe

With Frank Moe’s resignation Cook County and District 1 lost a good, principled, kind, hard working county commissioner. Frank needed to step away from the board for personal reasons. Those who follow the county board will miss his voice of reason. I didn’t agree with Frank on everything he said, but I never questioned his ethics or his passion to represent his district and the county as a whole. Here’s hoping that someone who will fill his remaining two years term on the county board comes into the job with similar principles and passion.

And here’s hoping that Frank Moe the sled dog racer has a great season of racing. Go get em, Frank!

More about Buzzle

Recently I asked readers if any of them had heard of Buzzle, Minnesota. Sure enough, one of them answered my call so I could learn more about this strangely named town.

“Hi, Brian! My name is Tracy Paro, I currently live in Grand Portage, but grew up in Bemidji… your article of fun names caught my eye because I grew up right on the line between Liberty and Buzzle townships. My mother is the clerk for Liberty Township. I gave her a call, and she is up for getting more information about the origins of Buzzle…she is going to contact her friend, who is the Buzzle township’s clerk to see if they have any history in their files. I will let you know ASAP what I find out!”

The next day Tracy got back to me with the following.

“Here is what I found out! Buzzle became a township on April 6, 1900. It was named after Walter Buzzle, whose uncle, interestingly enough, was Sumner Bagley, who Bagley was named for. He worked for his uncle Bagley at a logging camp, which was located in Bagley before it was officially a town. The current Buzzle Town Hall was the original school. My step-grandmother went to elementary school there…she has passed but would have been 96 this year, so the building is quite old. Hope this buzzes you up! Tracy.”

Thank you, Tracy, and thank you, readers. Keep the letters to the editor coming. Stay involved in your community, or get involved in your community. It can be in big ways or small ways. But always try to do something positive.
