Christmas at home

The conservative forecast predicted two inches of snowfall before Christmas day, but we received closer to six inches of fresh powder across northern Minnesota. More snow is expected to fall later this week and should be enough to improve the trails for both skiers and snowmobilers.

Christmas day was perfect outside with mild temperatures and a light breeze. Our kids spent the entire day skiing around the lodge with their new downhill skis they received for Christmas.

Our children used the short hill between the lodge and lake as a ski hill after opening presents Tuesday morning. I pulled them up with a rope until I could no longer stand it, then began giving them rides with the snowmobile until I could no longer stand it, and they could not get enough.

Practicing the basics around here seemed more economical than wasting time and money learning the basics at the real ski hill. They both are naturals and mastered the short hill and the left turn required to reach the bottom of the run and are ready for a day at Lutsen Mountain. They have yet to learn how to turn to the right, but they won’t have any problems figuring it out.

Staying home for the holidays is new for us, and despite feeling a little guilty that we are not going to see everyone, I am glad we did not have to deal with the tribulations of holiday travels. Waking up in a familiar bed, opening presents in our pajamas, and playing outside on a perfect winter day were exactly what we needed this Christmas.

Snowmobilers traditionally begin their season this week and the additional snow should allow groomers to start manicuring the trails. Devil Track Lake has about 12 inches of ice and I would expect to see the stakes and signs erected on the lake this week as well.
