Chris O’Brien for AEC board

I’m an Arrowhead Electric member, and I’m concerned that the majority of the electricity we use is generated from coal-fired power plants. Arrowhead’s supplier Great River Energy (GRE) reported that 66 percent of its electricity generation in 2016 was from coal. Furthermore, GRE’s long term strategic plan for 2018-2032 shows that in 2032 coal will still provide approximately half of all electricity for Arrowhead and other GRE customers. There has to be a better way, especially given that solar and wind technologies are becoming directly competitive with fossil fuels and will become even less expensive in coming years.

The upcoming board election is an opportunity for Arrowhead members to select a leadership team that understands these energy trends and is committed to accelerate a transition to cleaner technologies. I’ve worked with one of the candidates, Chris O’Brien, on the board of Cook County Local Energy Project (CCLEP) and have been impressed by his deep knowledge of energy market trends and clean energy technologies, and his pragmatic business sense and his collaborative approach to problem-solving. I encourage Arrowhead members to vote for Chris.
