Chris James Nicolaison,
60, of Grand Marais, passed away on February 13, 2014 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 22 at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Grand Marais.
Chris was born in Grand Marais to Carl and Pricilla Nicolaison on May 5, 1953. He graduated from Cook County High School and attended the University of Duluth for a short time before moving back to Grand Marais and marrying Lilean Garner.
Chris owned and operated Cobblestone Chevy Olds dealership, convenience store, garage, and fuel delivery service for much of his adult life until he sold the business and dedicated his time to various real estate investments and improvements, including a complete renovation of Borderland Lodge on Gunflint Lake. He volunteered for the Grand Marais Lions Club and was integral in bringing the Security State Bank to Grand Marais. After he sold his business he spent most of his time at his beloved log cabin on Magnetic Bay.
Chris is preceded in death by his father Carl and mother
Pricilla Nicolaison.
Chris is survived by his son Eric (Nicole) Nicolaison of Kingsley, Michigan, and daughter Gina McKenna of Milan, Michigan, three siblings, Wayne, Ann (David) Hess of Grand Marais, and Russell (Linda) Nicolaison of Grand Marais, and three granddaughters, Elizabeth, Kali, and Lila.
The family of Chris wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the Surgical ICU at the University of Michigan Hospital and Arbor Hospice in Ann Arbor, Michigan for the wonderful, compassionate care given to Chris in his final days. A special thanks to Lew, Chris’s new but dear friend in Hamburg, Michigan.
