Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center will open for the 2012 season at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 26. This year’s temporary exhibit focuses on the history of Chik-Wauk Lodge, which operated on the museum site from 1934-1980.
On the weekend of June 1-3, Chik-Wauk will host a series of birding-related hikes and presentations in conjunction with the Boreal Birding and Northern Landscapes Festival. During the weekend, Chik- Wauk will open its grounds at 7 a.m. each morning to accommodate early morning birders who wish to use Chik-Wauk’s hiking trail system.
Chik-Wauk has five birding backpacks containing a pair of binoculars and a birding guide available for use on Chik-Wauk’s 50-acre grounds. The backpacks can be checked out from the museum front desk during museum operating hours (10 a.m. – 5 p.m. daily). On Saturday, June 2, Chik- Wauk will host birding programs focusing on warblers, loons and the Minnesota Breeding Bird Atlas project. All presentations and walks begin on Chik-Wauk’s front porch. All presentations are free of charge and there is no need to register. There is a small admission fee for those wishing to go through the museum before or after the presentations.
