I’d already written and was ready to submit this week’s column when tragedy struck our community on New Year’s Eve. The death of a 22-year-old man in a fluke snowmobile accident made my original column seem trite, and I considered writing something else. Something more fitting.
But nothing about the death of a 22-yearold is fitting and, in view of his family’s grief, all I can do is offer my deepest sympathy.
However, I realized maybe my original column could have some meaning in the face of this heartbreak. Because when all is said and done, everyday moments are all we have of each other.
Favorite Things of 2016
. The January evening when my husband and I rode the four-wheeler into the woods to sit and gaze at the night sky. . The red squirrel who sits on top of the birdhouse outside my window. This same birdhouse has never seen a bird but did shelter a homeless tree frog one summer. . The faces of my grandchildren as they sit around the dining room table coloring in the coloring books I gave them. . The fleece vest I bought this autumn at a shop called EverEve. It’s not only warm and cozy but machine washable. My husband says I look like I’m sheepherding when I wear it. I don’t care. . Waiting to see the November super moon at Pincushion Overlook. Dick humored my love of celestial happenings and we patiently waited for the moonrise only to find the best view was over the Gunflint Golf Course on the drive home. . The wonderful warm weather of November 2016. I spent much of it outside basking. . Fisherman’s Picnic. Every year, Dick and I go to our favorite spot and cheer. Unplanned, the same people usually surround us, and we chat and enjoy the parade.
