The Cook County Curling Club was busy last weekend, March 9, 10 and 11, with 18 teams (72 people) taking part in the Charles J. Futterer Memorial Open Bonspiel.

This fun-filled family affair event was rich with teams that had first and second generation curlers playing. There were a lot of spectators — friends and acquaintances — in attendance watching games being played. Our youngest spectators were 2-year-old Odin Futtterer and his baby brother Lief. Their great-grandfather would be proud to know that those boys were in attendance.

While the action on the ice provided some great viewing, many who came out also came to say hi to extended family members and classmates and to socialize. To those who stopped by that didn’t know about the game of curling, club members were available to explain the game to them.

After dinner on Saturday evening Cook County Curling Club member Chaz Misenheimer mesmerized our guests with just of few of his many magic tricks. He did a wonderful job of “fooling” his audience with his illusions and sleight of hand. “How did he do that?” was a common comment after his performance. It truly was a treat to see and a highlight to the bonspiel.
