The Cook County Curling Club was busy last weekend, March 10, 11 and 12, with 20 teams taking part in the Charles J. Futterer Memorial Open Bonspiel. This fun-filled event was a family affair with many teams that had first and second generation curlers playing.
Chuck Futterer Jr., Craig Futterer and Joe Futterer each played and had family members on those teams. Joe’s team drove 15 hours to get here to compete in this bonspiel. Joe shared that they did stop on the way here at the Duluth Curling Club to stretch their legs. While visiting they had a friendly curling match against Olympic curler John Shuster, his wife Sarah and Doug and Kris Cameron who are members of that club. It was a nice way for “Team Arkansas” to start their curling weekend off, before arriving in Grand Marais.
As always, there were a lot of spectators behind the glass throughout the weekend. Some came to say hi to extended family members, but most came to watch some good curling and to socialize. To those that stopped by that didn’t know about the game of curling, club members were available to explain the game to them.
The Cook County Curling Club is in its final weeks of curling for the season. The public is always welcomed to come watch – stop by and enjoy the fun while you can!
