The 4th of July parade in Grand Marais was small but included all the usual patriotic themes—and of course, it included a number of cute kids, like the “Rasmussen Rockets” pictured on the right. The energetic little firecrackers won parade honors for the cutest kids.

Another parade tradition is the appearance of Smokey Bear. He and Peter Igoe of the U.S. Forest Service handed out Smokey Bear memorabilia.

The Grand Marais Swimming Pool won the prize for “Most Patriotic” with its flags and fitness theme.

The Tofte parade along the scenic Tofte Park Road was a delight as always and included characters such as this small “Uncle Sam.”

Above: American Legion Post 413 did double duty once again, leading the 4th of July parades in both Tofte and Grand Marais. Joining them in Grand Marais was the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.

Upper left: Embarrassed by all the fuss but enjoying the ride in the parade was 2011 Tofte Citizen of the Year Roger Michaelson. After the parade and the presentation of a plaque expressing appreciation to Roger for all his time and dedication to the township of Tofte, friends gathered to congratulate him on the well-deserved award. Upper right: Minnow Races at the Tofte Park were very exciting. Rooting for their favorite fish were (L-R) Will Hislop, Travis Stejskal, Jake Hislop, Scott Scheirbeck, and Maggie Quade. Travis won this round of minnow racing.
