Celebrate Syttende Mai at Zoar Lutheran

Syttande/syttende mai (meaning May 17) is Norwegian Constitution Day. The 17th of May is a celebration of the day in 1814 when Norway’s constitution was signed in the town of Eidsvoll, Norway.

This day is celebrated in Norway with parades of dressed-up children and adults carrying flags and singing. Each elementary school district arranges its own parade between schools with marching bands. The parade takes the children through the community, often making stops at homes of senior citizens, war memorials, etc.

Syttande/Syttende Mai is also celebrated in many Norwegian immigrant communities throughout the world, with traditional foods, sometimes including lutefisk. Syttende Mai will also be celebrated at Zoar Lutheran Church in Tofte. Fishcakes and meatballs will be the feature of Zoar Lutheran Church at the Saturday May 15 Syttende Mai Dinner. In keeping with the traditions that Margit Rodne set for Norwegian events, chefs Gary and Marsha Hansen and a hard working kitchen crew will be preparing a meal with all of the traditional delicacies.

Don’t miss this delicious fundraising event. Join us on Saturday, May 15, from 5 – 7 PM at Zoar Lutheran Church in Tofte. Tickets for adults are $12 and children under 12 years of age are $5.00.
