CCHS students place at the Minnesota State Envirothon meet

Two teams from Cook County High School qualified to participate in the 2023 Envirothon state competition held May 15 at in Fergus Falls, at Prairie Wetlands Learning Center.

Viking Envirothon Coach April Wahlstrom said her teams placed 15th and 18th out of 30 teams.

The Envirothon theme for 2023 was “Adapting to a Changing Climate.”

The top four teams at the Area 3 meet qualified of the state meet. Cook County placed first and fourth while Two Harbors placed second and third. All told 34 teams competed in the Area 3 region meet.

To prepare for competitions teams are taught and tested in five natural resource categories: Forestry, Aquatics/ Wetlands, Soils, Wildlife, and current environmental issues.

During meets teams are given 10-minutes to present an oral presentation to a panel of judges.

The top team at state can advance to the national Envirothon in July held at Mount Alison University Sackville, New Brunswick, Canada.
