Despite 37 points from Will Ramberg, the Vikings fell 68-64 at home against the McGregor Mercuries (Mercs) last Friday night.

The Vikings led early, but the Mercs chipped away at an eight-point deficit and took a 26-25 lead with 6:08 to play in the first half.

The Vikings managed to score 4 points in the final 6:08.

Meanwhile, the Mercs had three players who made three-point shots over that time, and their center put in a two-point basket underneath to give them a 38-29-halftime lead.

Coming out of the break Jordan Porter hit for two, but the Mercs went on a 10-point run to extend their lead to 48-33.

Next, Porter hit a “bunny” shot inside and then Ramberg made a great steal at midcourt, dashing to the basket for a layup and was fouled on the play. Ramberg’s free throw hit nothing but net to make the score 48-36. Will followed with another mid-range jumper and Ray Gordon drove and was fouled, making one of two free throws to make the score 48-39.

The Vikings rattled off five more points before the Mercs made a basket with the Vikings now trailing by six, 50-44.

A tired Viking team fell behind 64-51, but with four minutes left in the game a full court press rattled the Mercs. Both Ramberg and Porter made three baskets each in the Vikings’ run while holding the Mercs to three points.

With the Mercs up 67-64 and only a couple of ticks left on the clock, a Merc player hit the second of two free throws to give them a four point lead, too much to overcome with two seconds on the clock.

Point totals: Will Ramberg, 37; Jordan Porter, 15; Ray Gordon, 6; and Daunte Deschampe, 6.

Boys fall to Esko

Esko pulled away early against the Vikings on Tuesday, Jan. 15 in a game played in Esko and the boys lost 84-52.

The Vikings were led once again by 6’3” senior forward/ guard Will Ramberg, who netted 19 points. Ramberg is listed as a forward but he does the majority of ball handling for the Vikings, although he often plays forward on defense.

Junior guard Ray Gordon finished with 10 points, Pete Sutton 9, Adam Dorr 6, and Jordan Porter 4.

The Vikings play Silver Bay at home this Thursday after the paper has gone to bed. Their next home game is Thursday, January 24 against Mountain Iron-Buhl. The two teams take the floor at 6:30 p.m.
