Members of the Cook County High School band participated in the University of Minnesota-Duluth Honor Band performance on Saturday, November 3. Seniors Colin Everson, Mara MacDonell, Luke Fenwick, Bjorn Johnson, and Sarah Larsen and sophomore Libby Zafft joined two bands with 200 students from 57 high schools from Minnesota and Wisconsin, performing beautiful works by composer/conductor Dr. Frank Ticheli.
The band members spent Friday and Saturday working on four to six pieces of music.
Luke, Sarah and Bjorn were in the “Gold” band directed by Dr. Mark Whitlock, UMD professor of bands. Libby, Colin and Mara were in the “Maroon” band, directed by Rick Mowers, Esko High School band director.
The band students performed in a concert at UMD Marshall Performing Art Center on Saturday. The Maroon band performed Abracadabra and the Gold band, Sundance, both by Dr. Ticheli, an amazing musician and composer whose orchestral works have received considerable recognition in the United States and Europe.
The students were also treated to an impromptu performance by Rhythm and Brass, a talented world-traveling ensemble.
CCHS Band Director Keri Bilben said, “It was a fantastic weekend of music and performances. Make sure to ask the students what they thought of the weekend.”
