With the surge in COVID cases in Cook County and across the state, it became clear that plans to meet in person for the Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) Precinct Caucuses would have to change. So, for the first time ever, to ensure participation in grassroots democracy with public health in mind, contactless caucuses were held here on February 1.
Forty-four people submitted attendee forms, and 16 people indicated they wanted to be delegates to the county unit convention. There were no contests for delegate positions, so all 16 were elected automatically. More than 100 party platform resolutions were submitted, either by email to Chair Kevin LeVoir, or dropped off at the caucus sites in Grand Marais and Hovland.
The resolution receiving the most submissions was Prove It First, urging a moratorium on copper nickel sulfide mining until it is proven first to be safe in our extensive watershed.
Other resolutions included:
• Gun Violence Prevention for public safety
• Indigenous History and Culture to be included in K-12 curriculum requirements
• Rank-Choice Voting for state and federal offices
• Regenerative Farming methods
• Zero-Carbon Economy transition
• Green New Deal to provide an equitable energy future for all Minnesotans
• Reproductive Rights to support safe and legal access to reproductive health services
• Reduce Pesticides to curtail the use of pesticides like neonicotinoids which harm pollinators
DFL State Representative Rob Ecklund garnered wide support from caucus participants.
The CCDFL county convention planning is in progress for a Saturday in April. Stay tuned for details.
