Caught the cold

Presidents’ Day weekend was busy on the Gunflint Trail with cabin owners and vacationers traveling north for the holiday. This has always been a popular three-day weekend for many despite the possibility of treacherous February conditions.

Rachelle was pleasantly surprised at this weekend’s attendance since she is a waitress at both Hungry Jack Lodge and Bearskin Lodge on Saturdays. It is her one day of the week to get out of the house and make some money with back-to-back shifts.

The lack of early season business has been trying for any locals depending on the tourist buck to make their living on the Gunflint Trail, or anywhere for that matter. The recent snowfall was just what we needed to liven things up around here.

The fish were safe from my hook this weekend since I spent the President’s holiday at home, sick with my two sick kids. Rachelle took them to the doctor last Friday to discover they both had the common cold. We were nervous about nursing two sick children back to health without any thought of getting sick ourselves. It was difficult, but now that they have recovered and we have not— it is even worse. They have this pent up energy to burn while Rachelle and I wish we could just stay in bed all day and recover.

Unfortunately this lingering cold has been a bear to conquer as it has punished each member of our family with the wrath of its wake. Our simple immune systems cannot hold a candle to the sophisticated colds that city folk are presented with every day. One of the cons to living in isolation I guess. I am happy to say that we seem to be on the road to recovery and I would like nothing more than to have a healthy household once again.

March is just around the corner and the biggest winter events on the Gunflint Trail will be happening soon. Mush for a Cure, John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon and Winter Tracks are some of the winter’s highlights that people enjoy attending up here and each year they seem to gain popularity.

Make your plans soon and with a little luck we will still have some snow up here to play on this year.
