‘Tis the season! Coming up soon on the calendar are Black Friday, Shop Local Saturday and Cyber Monday all intended to get everyone in the holiday shopping mode. There are also a number of other shopping opportunities right here in Cook County featuring local artists, crafters and vendors.

At press time the talented artisans that take part in the North Country Creations Holiday Bazaar were putting the finishing touches on their assorted handmade items and delicious baked goods. They will be at the Schroeder Town Hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 22. In addition to exquisitely unique gifts of all kinds, you can enjoy coffee, tea and treats.

If you go, don’t forget to stop by the Cross River Heritage Center to say hello to Mrs. Santa Claus and enjoy watching lefse being made.

On Saturday, November 29, the Cook County Community Center and Log Cabin in Grand Marais will be filled with the sights and sounds of Christmas at the Crafts and Consultants Holiday Show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be many beautiful crafts and representatives from AVON, Dove Chocolates, Origami Owl jewelry, Pampered Chef, Tastefully Simple and Tupperware. Girl Scout Troop 4110 will be there with poinsettias for sale too.

There will be a bake sale and a delicious lunch at the Community Center by Alyce from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Also on November 29, the Hovland Arts Festival will be hosting its Hovland Artisan’s Christmas Sale at the Hovland Town Hall from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It’s worth the drive to see the beautiful crafts, artwork and gift items. Shop and enjoy some coffee, cider and treats.

In Lutsen on November 28-29, Last Chance Gallery & Studio will host its Holiday Market with a tree lighting on Friday evening and much more.

On December 6 there are a few more shopping options. The Grand Portage Lodge & Casino will be opening its conference room for a Christmas Craft Sale, which will feature beadwork, chainsaw carvings, jewelry, clothing, candles and jams, holiday décor, gift baskets and more.

In Grand Marais on December 6, the Evangelical Free Church will be hosting its annual Christmas Craft Sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This year proceeds of the event will be used to assist Kim Nelson of Grand Marais who is undergoing treatment for cancer.

The setup will be a bit different this year, with the crafters stationed upstairs in the church with the luncheon and a Silent Auction downstairs. Anyone who would like more information on the event is encouraged to call the Free Church at (218) 387- 1565.

Also on December 6, the Northwoods Fiber Guild will be at the Grand Marais Art Colony with the Holiday Sale & Open House from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Open House will offer spinning and weaving demonstrations and participants have the opportunity to learn a new fiber handcraft at the traditional hands-on table.

Across the street from the Art Colony on December 6, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., there is yet another shopping opportunity at the Cook County Girl Scouts Santa’s Workshop. The event has some great gift items for sale for all ages, but what makes it extra special is that the Girl Scouts give youngsters the chance to shop for their parents and siblings secretly. The Girl Scouts help select gifts and help the kids wrap them.

Santa’s Workshop kicks off with a pancake breakfast at 9 a.m. and switches to a light lunch at noon. There will also be a bake sale of delightful treats made by Girl Scouts and parents.

And Santa Claus himself will be there from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and kids will have the chance to have their photo taken with him.
