We spent one month of road construction at the Pine Mountain Campground last summer. We drove at least four times a day through the roadwork to town. Every time we were on the road, cars and trucks went whizzing around us. Even some guy in a county truck almost sideswiped us once. He didn’t see the flag girl and hit the brakes.
Before we left we did some Gunflint Trail exploring. The road to Mink and Kimball lake was a washboard—nearly shook our little Insight to pieces. No letters to the editor on that.
Mr. Dale worked for the Cook County Highway Department for 35 years. They could grade the new construction without the state’s permission in those days. Where is Jesse Ventura when you need him? Mr. Dale always said everybody wants good roads as long as they build them between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. with no dust or noise.
