Carolyn (Carie) Viola Cole Seaton

Carolyn (Carie) Viola Cole Seaton passed away peacefully on April 12, 2013. She was born November 30, 1924 in Cranston, RI to Archie and Eudora Cole, one of seven siblings who remained close all their lives. She attended college in Redlands, California, where she met and married John Knox Seaton. After college she taught school until her own children began to arrive, then was a full-time mom while Knox attended seminary and served as a pastor at churches in Wheaton, MN and Minneapolis, MN.

After returning to teaching in 1970, she specialized in English as a Second Language (ESL) for most of her career. In 1999 she moved to Grand Marais to be closer to her grandchildren and closer to the big lake which reminded her of her coastal childhood home town. She loved Grand Marais and the people in this community.

Carie was a voracious reader, loved the theater, orchestra and opera and never shied from a good conversation about books, politics or current events. In 2010 she moved to Lawton, Oklahoma to escape cold winters and be closer to her great-grandchild. Carie is survived by a brother Ashton Cole; children Alan (Linda Channel) Seaton, Nancy (Bob) Milan and David (Nancy) Seaton; grandchildren Thomas Seaton, Molly Milan, Ben Seaton, Will Seaton and great-grandchild Emma Hurley.

Carie was a great friend, listener, teacher, advocate, spouse and a mother. She will be missed. A celebration of her life will be held at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Grand Marais on June 4, 2013. Memorials are suggested to the Library Friends of Grand Marais or the First Congregational UCC of Grand Marais.
