Carl Reuben Eidnes

Carl Reuben Eidnes passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 10, 2016 with loved ones at his side.

Carl was born in Woodville, Wisconsin in 1925. He, his parents and four sisters lived in and around that area for most of Carl’s childhood, where Carl’s father was a Lutheran minister for multiple churches. The family moved to Grand Marais when Carl was a teenager, and he graduated from Cook County High School. Carl retained strong ties to that area, and he made frequent visits to Grand Marais throughout his lifetime.

Always keen to fly planes, Carl got his mother’s approval to enlist in the Army Air Corps (now known as the Air Force) at age 17 and began his military service shortly thereafter. His company was assigned to the Pacific theater. Carl proudly served our country as a Sperry-ball gunner in a B-24, and throughout his life was always happy to share his military experiences, especially with his beloved grandson Will and other youngsters in the extended family.

After the war, Carl returned home and embarked on a lifelong career as a business to-business salesman. Inheriting a charismatic communication style from his father, Carl enjoyed significant success in his career.

Carl was a music lover who regularly attended Minneapolis’ Orchestra Hall. He also enjoyed golf, and took great pleasure in his daily walks, taking in the beauty of his surroundings.

He is survived by his daughters, Cynthia Eidnes Hill and Sandra Eidnes Martin, Cynthia’s husband, Peter, and their son, Carl William “Will” and Sandra’s husband, Roger, as well as a large extended group of family and friends, including special, longtime friend Posy Smith.

Carl’s funeral services will be held at Calvary Lutheran Church in Golden Valley, where he was a long-time member until his passing. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 18, with the funeral service commencing at 11 a.m. Luncheon will be provided at the church immediately following the service. Burial with full military honors will be at 1:45 p.m., preceded by an escorted processional from Calvary Lutheran to Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
