The Caribou Lake Property Owners Association (CLPOA) held its annual meeting at the Lutsen Town Hall on Saturday August 30. Association members heard information from a variety of speakers.

District 5 County Commissioners Bruce Martinson gave a report on Cook County issues. Karen Evens of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) spoke on the monitoring of the Poplar River watershed.

Billy Blackwell from the Kitchi Onigaming Grand Portage Band of the Lake Superior Chippewa also gave a presentation. With interesting stories and information of the people, culture, and natural world, Blackwell told of the rich history of Caribou Lake and the Arrowhead region over the many centuries of human habitation.

After the meeting Billy climbed to the top of White Sky Rock and reflected upon its namesake, an Ojibwe man, White Sky, who had a hunting shack near the hill that overlooks Caribou Lake. The overlook with majestic panoramic views is a fitting memorial to White Sky, who was the first Native American to serve as a Minnesota State Conservation Officer.
