A public meeting to review design concepts for the Caribou Falls State Wayside Rest will be held at 6 p.m. June 2 at the Schroeder Town Hall. Area residents, elected officials and individuals interested in the wayside are encouraged to attend and provide feedback.

The design project proposes safety and aesthetic improvements to this popular and heavily used wayside, including changes to the location and design of the parking area as well as inclusion of new pedestrian pathways, interpretive signage and a vault toilet. The wayside design will meet ADA requirements to accommodate visitors with disabilities. Completion of the design project will position the project to be ready for next steps to implement construction improvements.

In January 2014, a steering committee was formed to address visitor safety, improved access and interpretation at the wayside. CJ Fernandez of Fernandez Landscape Architect and members of the committee will be present to explain the design concepts and answer questions. The Arrowhead Regional Development Commission (ARDC) is contributing to this project as facilitator and liaison between the steering committee, Fernandez Landscape Architecture and the project’s funders – the Minnesota Lake Superior Coastal Program and Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board.

The popular wayside rest is a great place to hike, especially this time of year.
