Care Partners presents End-of-Life Ethics

On Friday, April 6, people gathered from all churches and all walks of life to literally follow the cross. Hosted by the Cook County Ministerium, this is the 13th year this prayerful event has taken place. Community members follow the cross from church to church within the community, offering prayers for each church and its members. Above: The walkers head up Broadway Avenue, following Mary Ellen Ashcroft, Vicar of Spirit of the Wilderness Episcopal Church taking her turn at carrying the cross. The walk started at St. John’s Catholic Church and made stops at churches along the way. At the end of the walk, a service was held at the Evangelical Free Church.

Care Partners, founded in 2010, offers palliative care for patients with advanced illnesses, as well as those at the end of life. It also lends support to families of those patients. And, Care Partners offers training for volunteers and medical personnel. The latest in this ongoing training is a presentation of a program of the Hospice Foundation of America (HFA). On Thursday, April 19, Care Partners will host HFA’s 2012 Living With Grief® program, End-of-Life Ethics from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. in the Corcoran Classroom, lower level of the Sawtooth Mountain Clinic.

End-of-Life Ethics will examine the ethical issues and dilemmas that emerge at the end-of-life, the principles of ethical decisionmaking and the effects of these decisions on staff and families. A panel of noted authorities from many disciplines will use a case study approach to explore these tough issues.

Right: Outlying churches were also included in the prayers. Stops were made along the way to pray for churches on the east and west ends of the county. One of the loveliest places to pray was on the Grand Marais waterfront.
