September celebrations at the North Shore Care Center included Centenarian Day, which was celebrated at the North Shore Care Center on Wednesday, September 22 with a proclamation from Grand Marais Mayor Sue Hakes declaring that National Centenarian day is a very special day to recognize and honor people aged 100—and over—in our community.
Mayor Hakes presented a red rose to each of the five women centenarians in attendance—Margot Florell, Millie Mainella, Bertha Toftey, Wilma Liebsch, and Anne Maurin.
The festivities continued with Nora Bockovich welcoming centenarians, families and visitors with a special reading. Susy Lindskog performed cheerful old classics on the piano, following the theme “Young at Heart.”
The residents also welcomed autumn with a leaf tour up the Gunflint Trail, garden clean up, and time on the patios. There has been lots of baking going on—especially with apples, and there was plenty of homemade lefse, thanks to a visit from Vi Rindahl and Ethel Johnson last week.
October themes for activities will highlight German-American Month, Country Music Month, Columbus Day, and of course Halloween.
There will be two dances this month, beginning with the Oktoberfest Dance on Oct. 9 at 6 p.m. featuring the Schliep’s Polka Band.
Later in the month the band Portage
will play their classic country music for the Halloween Dance on Oct. 30 at 6:30 p.m. Additional musicians will include Al Fuller, Susan Scherer, Irene Thompson, and Susy Lindskog. Families, friends and community members are welcome to join any of our music events.
October outings will take us to lunch at Cascade Restaurant and to the Senior Center. We will go on an adventure somewhere—for our annual Mystery Trip – but that will be a surprise!
The monthly birthday party will be celebrated on Oct. 13 at 3 p.m. with piano music by Susan Scherer. There will be cake and ice cream for residents, families, and friends to honor Jane Backstrom, Ophelia Bassett, Ruth Stimmler, and Marian Buckman.
The Lioness Club will host their Saturday afternoon social for residents on Oct. 16 at 3 p.m. with special desserts and piano music with Irene Thompson.
We welcome the After School Lounge students for “Kids and Games” twice a month during the school year. We also look forward to the preschool costume parades at the Care Center and Hospital before Halloween. Residents will give out candy to children visiting at the Care Center on Halloween night, Oct. 31 from 5-7 p.m.
Activity Department Director Kay Rosenthal said, “Many thanks to the dedicated volunteers who contribute their time throughout the year to facilitate reading groups, craft projects, church services, exercise groups, perform music, assist with bingo and outings, or bake cakes and sew quilts. A special welcome to our two new computer volunteers, Katherine Marxen and Carolyn Wilhelm.”
There are volunteer opportunities for all ages at North Shore Care Center. For more information about volunteering, or to check out the activity calendar, please contact the Activity Department at 387-3518 or go to www.nshorehospital.com.
