The residents at North Shore Care Center will try to beat “cabin fever” with a full calendar of activities in February. There is a lot to look forward to all month.

There will be an outing to the Senior Center for lunch and visiting on Thursday, February 18.
The Grand Marais Lioness Club will host its monthly social for residents on Saturday, February 20 at 3 p.m. with delicious desserts for everyone. Irene Thompson will perform traditional tunes on the piano.
On February 23, Tim Young will share his artistic talent with a painting demonstration. He will bring his canvas and oils to create a painting while interacting with the residents. We look forward to the fun.
At the end of the month, the band Portage will play its classic country music on February 27 at 6:30 p.m. Families, friends, and community members are always welcome to join in the fun.
Additional live music in February will feature Myron Bursheim on Sundays, Al Fuller on Tuesdays, Susan Scherer on Wednesdays, and occasionally Harris Mills on Fridays. We thank everyone who contributes their musical talent at the Care Center. It lifts our spirits, and brings joy to all of us during these long months of winter.
We are making steady progress with the physical remodeling of our facility. As our physical structure changes, so will our ability to create a more home-like experience for our residents. We are using a variety of resources to learn about the Household Model of care. One example is our consultant, Marilyn Oelfke, RN, who will visit us in February. Marilyn has worked for more than 40 years in acute and long term care. She was the director of nursing and director of senior services at Perham Living, in Perham Minnesota for 24 years prior to retiring in 2012. During that time she was instrumental in transforming the facility from a traditional nursing home to one with households. She speaks to groups across the state, country, and internationally on the topic of “Creating Home” for the elders in long term care facilities. During her visit she will speak to staff, residents, and family members about the history of culture change in long term care, the Household Model, and experiencing “home” in a skilled setting.
We invite and encourage interested community members to attend her presentation on Monday evening February 22 from 6:30 – 8 p.m. in the hospital large classroom. For questions about this event please call 387-3260.
Cook County has a vibrant and active community of elders. Each week we will offer Senior News to highlight our senior citizens. This week’s submission is about the North Shore Care Center, courtesy of Activities Director Belinda Hudler.
