Care Center ready for summer

The warmer weather is certainly welcomed by residents at the Care Center, and we are looking forward to spending more time outdoors. There will be plenty to watch outside this summer as our construction progresses. The finishing touches are being put on the first wing of the Care Center, and we anticipate occupancy in that wing sometime towards the end of June.

On May 17, the residents spent a glorious afternoon on the patio for a Mexican fiesta. Hilja Iverson provided margaritas and delicious Mexican treats for all to enjoy while many took a turn at breaking open the piñata the residents had crafted. Lots of laughter and fun was had by all.

Our first picnic of the year was held on Memorial Day, and it was a beautiful day for a picnic. Everyone enjoyed those hot dogs, hot off the grill!

Several of our wonderful volunteers turned out for our annual Volunteer Appreciation Brunch on May 25. This was a time to honor and celebrate the folks who give so generously of their time to enhance the lives of those who call the Care Center “home.” You make a difference, and you are special!

Care Center residents created—and then smashed—a piñata to celebrate May. Above: Marce Wood and Ethel Leng put the finishing touches on the colorful piñata. Left: Bob Heideman takes a swing at the piñata while frequent Care Center visitor Woody looks on.

The month of June is National Gardening Month, and Gardening Exercise Day is June 6. Weather permitting, the residents will be busy planting flowers that day. With the construction project this summer, we will have our flower boxes on wheels to enjoy wherever our patio may be located.

The monthly birthday party will be held on June 8 at 3 p.m. to honor Creighton Spates, Eileen Hall, and Donna Willett. Cake and ice cream will be served along with favorite piano tunes by Doug Sanders.

June 9-16 is National Nursing Assistants’ Week. The residents want to thank all of the Nursing Assistants who work at the Care Center for the compassionate care they provide every day of the year. Thanks for all you do!!

There are two outings scheduled for June. On June 16, we will take a trip to Joynes to do some shopping. We will visit the Senior Center on June 30 for a delicious lunch, and will spend some time visiting with all our friends there.

At the end of the month, the band Portage will play their classic country music on June 25 at 6:30 p.m. Families, friends, and community members are always welcome to join in the fun.

Additional live music in June will feature Myron Bursheim on Sundays, Al Fuller on Mondays, Susan Scherer on Wednesdays, and occasionally Harris Mills.
