Care Center Celebrates Older Americans Month

May is Older Americans Month, a month designated to raise awareness about issues facing older adults, and to highlight the way older Americans are advocating for themselves, their peers, and their communities. May 14-20 is designated as National Nursing Home Week, a time to recognize the vibrant spirit of our residents, and to acknowledge staff who face each day with a sense of purpose and compassion. The staff at North Shore Health Care Center value the uniqueness, friendship, and wisdom our residents bring into our lives every day.

May will be a busy month, with lots of activities at the Care Center. With the warmer weather approaching, we are hoping for time outdoors to enjoy the sunshine and to start some outdoor gardening. There will be some fun craft activities also.

On May 3, the residents went on an outing to Bethlehem Lutheran Church to enjoy an exceptional evening of wonderful music put on by the Augsburg Choir and Orchestra. Another outing is planned for May 11, when the elders will travel to the Senior Center for lunch with our friends there.

The residents were busy filling Easter eggs in April for the Community Easter Egg Hunt. A total of 2,021 eggs were filled for the event!

The monthly birthday party will be held on May 10 at 3 p.m. to honor Jane Burley. You are invited to come and share in the festivities. We’ll have Eleanor’s delicious cake and ice cream, along with Doug Sanders on the piano.

We’ll celebrate the Minnesota Fishing Opener on May 13 with some tall fishing tales and talk about that big one that got away! Some tasty fish snacks will be served too.

There will be a reminisce and social time on Mother’s Day, May 14 at 2:30 p.m. to honor all the mothers who reside at the Care Center. Cupcakes and coffee will be served.

The annual Volunteer Appreciation Brunch will be held on Wednesday, May 17 at 10 a.m. The residents and staff want to acknowledge the many volunteers who have shared their time, talent, and friendship during this past year. We couldn’t provide the activities we offer without your help. You truly make our home a brighter place. You enrich the lives of our residents, and help them keep connected to their community. Thanks for all you do!

The residents always look forward to the annual “Gold Dollar Bingo” which will be held on Thursday, May 18 at 2:30 p.m.

There will be plenty of music in May too. Irene Thompson will once again be joining us for a piano sing-along on Saturday afternoons, and another sing-a-long is planned for May 15 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Daren Blanck. Tina Krauz and Amy Schmidt will be bringing their music to the Care Center this month, along with Myron Bursheim on Sundays, Al Fuller on Mondays, and Susan Scherer on Wednesdays.

A picnic lunch, with hot dogs right off the grill, is planned for Memorial Day. Games, treats, and fun are planned for the afternoon to kick off the summer season.
