The survival rate for patients who participate in cardiac rehab after a heart attack is significantly greater than the survival rate for those who don’t, Registered Nurse Dottie Roy told the North Shore Hospital Board on November 17, 2011. She is in charge of the hospital’s cardiac rehab program. Unfortunately, only 30 percent of those who qualify for cardiac rehab actually get it.
Roy helps patients make numerous changes to improve their health. For about three months, they come in two or three times a week for an hour at a time and work on stretching, strength training, and cardio. She also teaches them how to eat better. “They call me The Food Nazi,” she said.
“There’s a lot of fear associated with having a heart attack or heart surgery,” Roy said. She informs patients that 80 percent of their heart disease is under their control. “Most people leave here in much better health and much better spirits,” she said.
Rehab patients are monitored electronically when they exercise, and any abnormal rhythms are sent to their doctors. They have a cart with special equipment in case of emergencies.
What are some common misconceptions Roy deals with? “Oh, I’ve got a good diet. I eat healthy,” is what she hears, but when patients detail exactly what they are eating, she often finds

The good news is that the hospital cardiac equipment is available for the public to use at a cost of $25 a month. Open hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Roy will do a fitness evaluation and make exercise recommendations when people first sign up. She can be reached at (218)387-3271.
