Cook County Law Enforcement received a call of a car “way down in the ditch” at the Poplar River in Lutsen at 7:16 a.m. on Tuesday, May 24. The 2003 black Hyundai Elantra was discovered by Lutsen volunteer firefighter Ben Belland who noticed a badly damaged guardrail on Highway 61 on the lakeside of the river and stopped to investigate.
Minnesota State Patrol responded to find the car unoccupied. After investigation it was discovered that the car belongs to Melissa Sue James, 24, of Finland, Minnesota.
The car was pulled from the river by Cook County Towing. The car suffered severe damage.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
