A 911 call went out at approximately 3:50 p.m. on Tuesday, February 5 reporting that a car had rear-ended a school bus near 1741 East Highway 61. A Grand Marais woman was transported to the hospital but students on the bus were unhurt.
The school bus driver, Lyle Anderson, 63, of Grand Marais told Minnesota State Patrol that the bus made two close stops and then was rearended at the next driveway. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Karen Gale, 64, of Grand Marais was driving a 2004 Hyandi Elantra and apparently became distracted.
Cook County Ambulance, Grand Marais First Responders and the Grand Marais Fire Department were paged. The fire department was cancelled, but the ambulance transported Gale to Cook County North Shore Hospital, who was suffering chest pains, likely from the seat belt protection. She was kept overnight for observation and released.
Gale’s vehicle was totaled and was towed from the scene.
None of the students on the bus were injured, but they did have to wait onboard the bus for another bus to complete the route. The bus received a post-crash inspection by the Minnesota State Patrol and no problems with the bus were found.
At press time, no citations had been issued.
