A motorist called Cook County Law Enforcement at 7:52 a.m. on Thursday, October 20, reporting that a blue Audi was pulled over on the side of Highway 61 near County Road 13. The caller said the vehicle was smoking badly.
A Cook County Sheriff ’s Deputy responded and confirmed that the Grand Marais Fire Department should also respond. The fire department arrived with its pumper truck at 8:11 a.m. and found the vehicle engulfed in thick smoke. The interior of the car was so hot the dashboard was starting to melt.
