A single vehicle accident near Cliff Cove Road in Schroeder sent one person to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries at 9:44 a.m. on April 29.
Christine Cathryn Smith, 56, of Grand Marais was driving westbound on Highway 61 in a 2013 Ford Focus when her car left the road ending up in the deep creek bed to the west of the Taconite Harbor Energy Center. The Ford Focus sustained significant undercarriage damage from hitting the ditch on the upper side of the highway.
According to Minnesota State Patrol, Smith was wearing her seatbelt. However because of the way the vehicle entered the ditch, the airbags did not deploy. She was transported to North Shore Hospital with neck and back pain.
Smith told the State Patrol that she had fallen asleep. No citations were issued.
