While it takes a village to raise a child, it took more than a village to make the 2105 Gunflint Trail Canoe Races the most successful in its 40-year history.
The generosity of Grand Marais and Gunflint Trail businesses, Wenonah Canoes for the grand prize – a Current Designs Kestrel 120 kayak—dozens and dozens of volunteers who sold shirts, raffle tickets and organized and worked the event, and visitors and residents who bought raffle tickets and bid on auction items are what made it possible to raise more than $20,000 for the Gunflint Trail Volunteer Fire Department.
While so many gave generously, one business and its owners deserve a special thank you. For four decades, Sue and Bruce Kerfoot have allowed the Gunflint and Seagull Lake property owners to use the resort and its extraordinary facilities for this fundraiser. Without the Kerfoots’ generous spirit, there would be no fundraiser and the GTVFD would likely have to do without.
Thank you all for supporting our fire department. The volunteers in the department are there for us 365 days a year helping make the Trail a safer and better place for visitors and residents alike. Last Wednesday was our day to do something for them.
