Candidates sought for city/county boards

When Anna Hamilton lost a close decision to serve on the Grand Marais City Council, it opened another venue for her to (possibly) serve on a myriad of opening on boards and councils.

City administrator Mike Roth and councilor Kelly Swearingen both encouraged Hamilton to put her energy, time and talents to use on any number of openings.

But as true as that could be for Hamilton, it could be your calling as well.

Candidates are being sought for a number of city boards and commissions for the City of Grand Marais. At the Wednesday, December 12 Grand Marais City Council meeting, City Administrator Mike Roth told the council he would place an advertisement for the positions but suggested that councilors talk to citizens who may be interested.

At times the city has plenty of applicants, other times positions are left open for weeks or months, waiting to be filled. It ebbs and flows.

Roth said the city advertises for all of the positions, even for positions held by people who have expressed willingness to continue.

Currently there is one opening on each of the following boards and commissions: the Library Board, Park Board, Economic Development Authority (EDA), Planning Commission, and one opening on the Public Utilities Commission (PUC).

Details on qualifications for the open positions, length of terms, and frequency and dates of meetings are available at City Hall. For more information, call Roth at (218) 387-1848.

Roth said interested parties should submit applications by January 8, 2019 so the council can review candidates at the first meeting in January. The city council usually makes the appointments at the first or second meeting of the New Year.
