With three Cook County commissioner seats open in the coming fall election it looks like there will be a primary race in just two districts.
In District 5 incumbent county commissioner Ginny Storlie will compete against former District 5 commissioner Bruce Martinson and newcomers Bruce Zimpel and Don McKeever.
Former Grand Marais city councilor Dave Mills and former Cook County commissioner Jean Marie Modl will square off against newcomer to politics Mickey Brazell in District 3. Current commissioner Jan Sivertson did not file to run again.
Robert (Bobby) Deschampe is the lone commissioner candidate in District 1.
No one signed up to run against auditor/treasurer Braidy Powers, sheriff Pat Eliasen, county attorney Molly Hicken or county recorder Dusty Nelms.
The last day to file for the race was June 5.
A run-off will take place August 14 with the top two commissioners in District 3 and District 5 moving on to the November 6, 2018 election.
According to the county website, all voters in the contested precincts who have registered by the 21st day before the election (July 24, 2018) will be mailed a ballot.
A voter who is not registered to vote in the district on the 21st day before the election may submit, by mail or in person, an application for an absentee ballot to the county auditor and receive voter registration forms and absentee ballot for the election.
An electronic voting system is available at the Auditor’s Office to permit people with disabilities to bring their blank ballot to the courthouse and vote privately and independently. The system will be available for public demonstration in the Auditor’s Office starting June 29.
