It’s not possible for appreciation of the new Grand Marais Civic Center to run deeper than the depth I feel. I call the project the GM Center because that’s what it is, though I politely thank the promoters for calling it a county venture as a way of getting funds from the county’s outlying areas.
That kind of thoughtfulness is not without cost, however. But I do agree the village of GM needs public space due to church basements and halls being in use day and night plus the present community building booked solid around the clock, isn’t it?
The promoters convinced me the county will perish of neglect if we don’t have yet one more sprawling parking lot to sit empty 99.9 percent of the time outside a big new building with a main function of holding air from straying too far. Yes, we need that. Apparently we can’t do without it.
For a while it bothered me the GM Civic Center project used a deceitful Community Center label, but I got over that due to appreciation on my part for being lied to so nicely. Thank you entirely.
I was glad the promoters got rid of the pool contract by paying for something we won’t get. Is there a list to get in line to sell you things you won’t get? I request being put on that list.
I have a suggestion to improve the beguiling appeal of this doggle in the boonies by adding a Christian Science Reading Room, Scientology Center, and Mosque/ Temple for pilgrim appeal. Then you’d have the Grand Marais Ecumenical Civic Center which would be a blessing along with a boondoggle.
Think big promoters, think big! Throw in a Civic Aquarium and an Underwater Zip Line out to Five Mile Rock and see them come a-flocking.
It’s sad indeed to contemplate the list of additional useless things we might be doing for lack of visionary ways to dip in others’ pockets.
